American Dustin Poirier defeated Irish Conor McGregor in Abu Dhabi.
Dubai, UAE. American mixed martial artist (MMA) Dustin Poirier defeated Irishman Conor McGregor. Their fight, UFC 257, was the main event of the Absolute Fighting Championship in Abu Dhabi. The American knocked out a 32-year-old opponent in the second round.
Former interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier wore down lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor with crippling leg kicks to set up a TKO in round two of their rematch from the 2014 main event at UFC 257 on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi.
“Let’s do it again,” said Poirier as he called himself ‘the champ.’ McGregor, who won the first fight six years ago, paid tribute to Porier’s striking and readily agreed to fight him for the third time. But he was clearly shattered by the loss as he said: “I’m gutted. It’s a bitter pill to swallow. In this business, you got to stay active; I’m here. Let’s do it again. Poirier is such a good fighter.” Poirier’s wife, Jolie, who was ringside, screamed out to the Etihad Arena crowd: “I told you!”
Conor McGregor suffered his fifth career defeat. The Irishman became the champion of the promotion in two weight categories. The fight with Dustin Poirier was his first after resuming his career. After the fight, McGregor announced that he would continue his career and be active in 2021.
UFC lightweight champion Russian fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov reacted to the defeat of Irishman Conor McGregor to American Dustin Poirier at UFC 257. “This is what happens when you change your team, leave the sparring partners who made you a champion, and train with young children far from reality,” Khabib Nurmagomedov wrote on Twitter.
The third championship in the mixed martial arts series “Fight Island” was held in the capital of the United Arab Emirates from January 16 to 24, 2021. The sports tournaments were organized by the international organization Ultimate Fight Championship, or UFC.
At the brand new and ultra-modern Etihad Arena, the championship took place on Yas Island, the largest indoor sports and entertainment center in the region. A limited number of spectators were admitted to the stands due to implementing a set of measures to prevent the coronavirus COVID-19.
The opening of the Etihad Arena is one of the major events in Abu Dhabi this year. The site complements Yas Island’s look and represents a new landmark of both the UAE and the region as a whole.
The Etihad Arena accommodates up to 18000 people and can host large-scale events such as sports competitions, world-class concerts, musicals, international exhibitions, and small private events. The property is located at the southern tip of Yas Island, which also houses the Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island, a beach club, a pier with cafes, restaurants, and boutiques.
